Curriculum & Certification
This Certification and Curriculum Program developed through a special partnership between Avid and Rowman & Littlefield enables high school students to become Avid-Certified Associates in Media Composer | First. As part of the Avid Learning Academy, this Media Composer | First curriculum aims to empower high school teachers with a ready-made curriculum to train and certify their students on Avid’s family of industry-standard creative software. The Avid Learning Academy Program is designed for students looking for an affordable way to start a career in the digital media & entertainment industry.
The Curriculum
Developed by veteran educators and industry professionals, the Media Composer | First curriculum includes student guides, separate lessons plans, hands-on exercises with engaging media resources, and more. The curriculum provides educators the tools needed to introduce students to the world of filmmaking with the eyes of an editor.
The curriculum guide highlights California’s Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards for Art, Media, and Entertainment (AME) and learning objectives based off of National Core Arts Standards (NCAS) for Media Arts for each of the 18 lessons included in the book.
All textbook content is automatically made available on a digital streaming interface—though a standalone version of the book is also available for purchase in print and ePub formats—to allow for integration with a learning assessment platform.

On the platform, students can:
Review course content by lesson or by topic
• Take practice quizzes
• Review results and receive feedback and study suggestions that link directly back to relevant parts of the digital textbook
• Take course exams and quizzes assigned by their instructor

Instructors can:
Create class quizzes and exams based on course content, tailored to a specific level of difficulty
• Track student results using built-in grade sheets
• Give students access to the Media Composer | First certification exam when they are suitably prepared

The Software
Media Composer is the industry standard Non-linear Editing program used to edit more TV, Film and streaming shows than any other program.
Media Composer | First is a free version of that same software, focusing on the fundamental functions of Media Composer and winnowing down some of the more advanced tools. It is designed to smooth the introduction to Avid software for first-time users. The workflow mimics the full Media Composer so all the skills students learn in the First program will seamlessly translate to future use of the full Media Composer program.
Students who graduate high school with a fluency in the Media Composer | First workflow will launch more readily into using Media Composer in a postsecondary setting.

The Certification
Students who pass the Media Composer Certification exam gain the first component of the industry-recognized Media Composer certification.

• Avid’s Associate certifications are designed to articulate seamlessly with Avid’s well-established certification programs taught at college and professional Avid Learning Partners.
• Certified Students will have full access to the AVID network of editing professionals and fellow learners
• Certified students will have the opportunity to engage with industry professionals and unique learning opportunities

Avid Learning Academy certifications give your students a head-start on their career, whether headed for college or straight into industry.  Everything you need to start, or enhance, your CTE-funded media arts education program!
